چکیده

Cone-beam Computed Tomography-based Image-guided Radiotherapy Variation of the target position is a major challenge in the clinical practice of external beam radiotherapy (EBRT). Variability of the tumour position from day to day is caused by breathing, changes of the filling of hollow organs and peristaltic or more complex changes of the anatomy of patients. If not corrected or compensated for, this variation of the target position may cause imprecise delivery of the irradiation dose with increased doses to the normal tissue and decreased doses to the tumour. Consequences are increased rates of toxicity and decreased tumour control probability. Traditionally, these uncertainties have been compensated for using safety margins around the tumour, which ensure dose coverage of the target volume despite these uncertainties.

The Impact of Residual Geometric Inaccuracies on Normal Organ Doses in Image Guided-Radiation Therapy of Prostate Cancer Using On-Board Kilovoltage Cone-Beam Computed Tomography

Introduction: The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate the variations in delivered dose to the bladder, rectum, and femoral heads of prostate cancer patients during a course of treatment by image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT). Materials and Methods: Overall, 15 patients with prostate cancer were selected and. Each week, for each patient five consecutive cone beam computed tomograph...

Comparative Study between Electronic Portal Imaging Device (EPID) and Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) for Radiation Treatment Verifications

Introduction: Electronic Portal Imaging Device (EPID) and Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) are the preferred tools of Image Guided Radiotherapy (IGRT) and Dose Guided Radiotherapy (DGRT) which have been used for Radiotherapy treatment verifications. As a result, the number of publications dealing with these two tools for radiation treatment verification has increased consi...

Methods to evaluate the performance of kilovoltage cone-beam computed tomography in the three-dimensional reconstruction space

Background: Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scanners for image-guided radiotherapy are in clinical use today, but there has been no consensus on uniform acceptance to verify the CBCT image quality yet. The present work proposed new methods to fully evaluate the performance of CBCT in its three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction space. Materials and Methods: Compared to the traditional methods...

Towards Personalized Imaging in Image-guided Radiotherapy

Recently, with the advent of linear accelerators equipped with on-board x-ray images and advanced imaging technologies, image-guided radiotherapy (IGRT) has gained worldwide momentum in the radio therapeutic management of cancers in terms of volumetric information-based accurate tumor localization, real-time patient setup and margin reduction [1,2]. The involved technologies include digital rad...

Artifact reduction techniques in Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) imaging modality

Introduction: Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) was introduced and became more common based on its low cost, fast image procedure rate and low radiation dose compared to CT. This imaging modality improved diagnostic and treatment-planning procedures by providing three-dimensional information with greatly reduced level of radiation dose compared to 2D dental imaging modalitie...
